Frequently Asked Questions
Straight answers to what Flathead Valley homeowners actually ask us — on price, process, Trex, and who you're hiring. If your question isn't here, just ask.
Pricing & Financing
How much does a composite deck cost in the Flathead Valley?
We won't dance around it: most of our composite builds land in the $40K–$50K+ range depending on size, site, railing, and design. Quality composite materials alone often run $20,000 or more before a single board goes down. For real ranges and what actually drives the price, read the full breakdown: How Much Does a Composite Deck Cost in the Flathead Valley?
Do you offer financing?
Yes. If you'd rather spread the cost out instead of writing one big check, financing is available. Ask about it during your free estimate and we'll walk through the options together.
What does your proposal actually include?
A detailed line-item proposal: full scope of work, the specific materials we'll use, the timeline, and the cost broken out item by item. No lump-sum mystery numbers, no surprise change orders. It's yours to think on — no pressure after we hand it over.
The Build Process
What does your bid process look like?
Four steps: a consultation where we look at your site and talk through what you want, a preliminary design, then takeoffs and labor calculations against that design, and finally a detailed proposal covering scope, materials, timeline, and the full cost breakdown. Josiah does every bid himself — no estimators, no salesmen.
Do I need a permit to build a deck here?
What goes into the structure under the deck boards?
The part you never see is the part that decides how long your deck lasts. Our footings go at least 3 feet below grade — below the Flathead Valley frost line — so frost heave can't shift the foundation. For wood framing we prefer fir and larch over pressure-treated pine, which warps badly in our freeze-thaw cycles. We wrote up the whole anatomy of bad builds here: Why Decks Fail in Montana.
Composite & Trex
What does TrexPro Platinum certification mean?
Platinum is Trex's highest installer tier, and we're the only TrexPro Platinum builder in the Flathead Valley. It means our framing meets Trex's exact specification — which keeps your material warranty valid — and Trex backs our work with an additional 4-year labor warranty. If anything fails in the first four years, Trex covers materials and labor. More on our composite deck page.
Do you register the Trex warranty for me?
Yes. Most contractors never register their customers' Trex warranties — meaning the coverage homeowners think they have was never activated. We register yours at project completion, and Trex sends you a welcome package confirming it's live. Full story: The Trex Warranty Most Homeowners Never Actually Get.
Should I build with composite or wood?
Depends on budget and how much maintenance you'll tolerate. Composite costs more upfront but never needs staining or sealing and handles Montana freeze-thaw far better. If you go wood, material choice matters — we build with fir and larch rather than pressure-treated pine. We laid out the honest comparison here: Composite vs. Wood Decks in Montana.
Service Area & Scheduling
What towns do you serve?
How soon can you start my project?
It varies by season — spring and summer book up fast in the valley. The best move is to request an estimate early, because design, permitting, and material lead times can run in parallel so your build slot isn't wasted.
About the Company
Are you licensed and insured?
Yes — licensed and insured in Montana, with proof available on request. Worth knowing: Montana's contractor registration costs $125 and requires no test, so a registration number alone tells you almost nothing about a builder. Ask any contractor for current insurance certificates and references before you sign — including us. We put together a full checklist: How to Choose a Deck Builder in Kalispell.
Who will I actually be dealing with?
Josiah — the owner, and a veteran. He does every bid himself, comes out to look at every site personally, and checks active job sites multiple times a week. Western Rockies Construction is veteran-owned and based in Kalispell.
What types of projects do you take on?
Custom decks, deck repairs and rebuilds, covered decks, framing, siding, fencing, and interior remodeling. Decks — especially composite — are what we're known for, but plenty of clients use us as the one crew they trust for all of it.
